Built in 1963-1965, this Modern International-style skyscraper was designed by Natalie de Blois and Bruce Graham of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States to serve as their Chicago headquarters. The building was built on land formerly owned by the Chicago Tribune, with the sale of land coming with the stipulation that the building should feature a plaza along Michigan Avenue in front so as to preserve the view of the Tribune Tower from further south on Michigan Avenue, as well as from the Chicago River.
