Built in 1965, this Modern Neo-Formalist building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki for the Northwestern National Life Insurance Company, which had outgrown their previous headquarters in Loring Park. The building was constructed as part of the urban renewal around the Gateway District along Hennepin Avenue and Nicollet Avenue in Downtown Minneapolis, and features a large portico that serves as a terminus to the Nicollet Mall, preserving the openness of the corridor to pedestrian traffic.
