A gift from the Polish Parliament to Germany in 2009 and unveiled on June 17th 2009, the 56th anniversary of the East German Uprising of 1953, this section of a brick wall once was part of a structure at the Gdańsk Shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland. This shipyard was the site of a major labor strike in 1980 that began the Solidarność (Solidarity) trade union movement in Poland, which helped spread anti-Communist, populist movements throughout the Eastern bloc.
