The Gateway Arch, a National Landmark in St. Louis (1965). In the 1930s, a national memorial to the Louisiana Purchase was proposed to the mayor of St. Louis. After the project received millions of dollars in grants from the Public Works Administration and the Works Progress Administration, president Franklin D. Roosevelt approved the memorial. Eero Saarinen's design was unanimously chosen in a contest in 1948. The arch finally opened in 1967.
