The Leigheys lived in the home in Falls Church from the time they purchased the home (1947) through the early 1960s. Mr. Leighey’s health began to fail him about this time. In 1961, they received a first notice that their home was in the path of a new highway being built. They didn’t appear to do anything at this time. Soon after Mr. Leighey died in 1963, Mrs. Leighey received the definitive notice that she needed to vacate her home to make way for I-66. This is when she really swung into action.
