The Farnsworth House (1945−51) — Modernist residence designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, located near Plano, Illinois. Dr. Edith Farnsworth commissioned Mies to design a state-of-the-art house like the ones she read about in Europe. Situated above the Fox River, the house was instantly recognized as an architectural milestone with its all-glass exterior and modernist expression. Mies and Farnsworth fought near the end stages of the project, so some aspects of the building were never installed. Farnsworth used the house as a summer retreat for the next 21 years.
