national bank of denmark, copenhagen, 1961-1978. architect: arne jacobsen, 1901-1971. final stages completed by architects dissing+weitling. what is potentially most offensive about the national bank is the fact that it is a monument to power, not to democracy, but to one of the great institutions of power which predates democracy in denmark by centuries, the treasury. and these old institutions in copenhagen are infamous for being closed and elitist, sovereign, arrogant - to some degree untouched by the values of democracy. they were born of an autocratic government in love with colonization,
